Questions in the Bible - Nahum & Hosea
By Prof Hermon Hanko

There are many questions within the Bible, 2,540 to be exact.

The Christian Literature Ministry has shortlisted and compiled a list of them based on certain criteria:

i) Can be linked to Christ
ii) Significant in history of church
iii) Spiritual lesson for us
iv) A question we may also ask

After 6 years of effort, 12 books of the bible have been completed. In addition to the 6 meditations from Rev. Lanning, the writers are: Prof. Herman Hanko, Rev. Richard Smit and Rev. Cory Griess. We are grateful for their labour of love.

May you benefit spiritually from the meditations, and pray with us that gradually we may compile more meditations from questions in other books of the Bible.

Through Many Dangers

by P. M. Kuiper

From the RFPA website:

August 1862. Eighteen-year-old Harm van Wyke finds his quiet life in the Dutch Reformed community of Holland, Michigan, upended by the American Civil War. When it becomes clear the war will not be as easily won as once believed, President Lincoln calls for 300,000 volunteers to defend the Union. Harm’s minister, Rev. Albertus van Raalte, encourages the young men of his community to join the cause. Harm’s father bitterly opposes the idea. Harm hesitates to leave his home, but when his friends portray the war as a grand adventure, he gives in and joins them. Together, some eighty boys and young men from Holland join the 25th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

As Harm and his friends travel to army camps in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and then Louisville, Kentucky, they face daily temptations to forget God and turn from their faith. Fellow soldiers think nothing of taking the Lord’s name in vain. They gamble, drink, and “forage” from neighboring homes and farms. Harm and his friends gather regularly to sing the old psalms and discuss the Bible, but still, on occasion, they stumble and fall.

As the war progresses, the boys from Holland battle Confederate General John Hunt Morgan in Western Kentucky, and endure an arduous march to Eastern Tennessee where they join the fighting around Knoxville. Later, they take part in General Sherman’s prolonged and bloody Atlanta campaign. Along the way, Harm and his friends face the harsh realities of war—exposure, disease, injury, and death. In the midst of such hardship, Harm’s faith is tried at every turn. His greatest conflict turns out to be spiritual. Will God give Harm the strength to stand for what is right, even if he finds himself opposed by friends?

The Church's Hope: The Reformed Doctrine of the End

by David J. Engelsma

From the RFPA website:

The Christian’s hope is the visible, bodily, glorious return of the Lord Jesus Christ on the clouds of heaven with the resurrection of the Christian’s body, the public vindication of the Christian at the last judgment, and the enjoyment of the glories of the new creation.

David J. Engelsma writes on eschatology in the service of the church’s hope. This volume treats the magnificent subjects of the intermediate state and the millennium. The bulk of this book is devoted to a thorough analysis of the millennium, with a vigorous defense of Reformed amillennialism. Especially thorough is Engelsma’s critique of postmillennialism, which he sees as a threat to Reformed churches. Both postmillennialism and dispensational premillennialism subvert the church’s hope. Postmillenialism fixes the believer’s hope on a golden age within history in which the church will be dominant—a carnal victory. Dispensational premillenialism fixes the believer’s hope on a fictitious rapture, which will snatch the church out of the world so that God can fulfill his program in history with the Jews. Both views leave the church unprepared for the future.

As Engelsma demonstrates, the last things—centrally the coming of Christ—are the purpose and goal of all the revelation of God in scripture, from beginning to end. This book will encourage the Christian as he heeds Christ’s instruction regarding that coming: “Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:13).

His Friends and Servants
Tell His Wonders, volume 2

by Nathan J. Langerak

From the RFPA website:

By the wonder of salvation in Jesus Christ God establishes a covenant with us his people and makes us his friends and servants. And in his mercy he also makes a promise to us: I will be your God, and I will never forsake you.

God is always faithful to keep the promises he makes to us, even as he kept his promises to the patriarchs Abraham and Jacob. We may suffer terrible troubles in this world like Job or Joseph, but God rules all things for our sakes, and so his plan for us is always good.

As his friends and servants we seek heaven and flee the temptations of the world. The God who delivered his servant Daniel from the lion’s den also delivers us from the devil and keeps us safe until he brings us to heavenly glory.

This second book in the Tell His Wonders Bible story book series includes stories about Job and the patriarchs, Joseph and his brothers, several judges, King David, Daniel and his friends, and more.

Nathan J. Langerak is a minister in the Protestant Reformed Churches of America. In addition to the two books in the Tell His Wonders series, he has written Walking in the Way of Love, a two-volume commentary on the book of 1 Corinthians. He and his wife and their six children live in Crete, Illinois.

Michael Welply has illustrated more than eighty books, including The Random House Book of Bible Stories and Biblical Times, published by Simon and Schuster. He has two adult children and three grandchildren. He and his wife live in Levet, France.

Prof. and Carol Dykstra

Over the last few months, we were extremely blessed and thankful to have Prof Dykstra who was able to bring to us God's word via live streaming. In the last month, Prof. Dykstra was allowed to be relieved from his seminary duties and to come to Singapore to help us with pulpit supply. Prof. and Carol Dykstra arrived in Singapore on 15 Dec and has since provided pastoral help while serving their two-week Stay-Home Notice. They have recently did a swab test and tested negative for COVID-19. Thank God for His preservation and grace in granting to them a safe journey to Singapore and good health.

We are thankful to God for showing to us His will and that we could continue to receive the preaching of God's Word despite the circumstances that we are currently in. We are also thankful for the labour of love and the sacrifice of the Dykstras.

CK Camp 2020

This year, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the annual CK Camp was conducted in a different manner. The camp participants were split into three groups where they gathered in three different homes while having their various activities. Prof. Dykstra gave the talks for the camp and discussions and outings were conducted as well. We hope that the youths had a good time of fellowship and we pray that they may grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Thank God for this opportunity.

Christmas Gospel Meeting

Similar to most of the activities conducted this year, the Christmas Gospel Meeting was brought online and conducted over Zoom. Many homes were opened to receive friends and guests, where they gathered to listen to the Gospel message by Prof. Dykstra on Mark 2:17. This was followed by singing of carols and a meal at each respective houses. It was a good time of fellowship and it was a good opportunity for many to get to know other members better. Thank God for this occasion.

Unfolding Covenant History: From Samuel to Solomon - Volume 6
by David J. Engelsma

From the RFPA website:

After a fifteen-year hiatus, and fourteen other published titles, Prof. David J. Engelsma continues the Unfolding Covenant History series, a covenantal exposition of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament history covered in this volume is extensive, covering the account of the life and significance for the covenant of Samuel, Saul, David, and Solomon. This is the history recorded in 1 and 2 Samuel; 1 Kings 1–11; 1 Chronicles 10–29; and 2 Chronicles 1–9. In addition, the volume takes into consideration other passages in scripture (Psalms) that reflect on this history.

This history is also rich in significance with regard to the development of God’s covenant and covenant dealings with his people. It includes the institution and early functioning of the office of the prophet; the institution of the office of king; the stark contrast between the people’s choice as king, in the charismatic, but reprobate, Saul, and God’s elect, David; and the realization of the fellowship of the covenant in the Old Testament in the temple. Among the fascinating and controversial events of the history on which the volume sheds light is the appearance to Saul of the “witch of Endor.”

The Church Camp for 2020 has been cancelled due to the current pandemic situation. Lord willing, the camp committee would be re-scheduling the booking to the following year in June. We pray for God's guidance with regards to this.

CERC Activities

We thank God that the authority has allowed worship services to resume, though in a limited way of 50 pax per group at any 1 time. With the church divided into 4 groups, each group will be able to attend church physically twice in a month. Albeit the small numbers and the inability to have fellowship lunch together, we thank God for this opportunity to be in God's house once again.

Other Church activities have been cancelled or postponed or brought online. We thank God in all things and let us continue to pray for God's guidance and His will for the days ahead.

CERC Kolkata

We continue to remember our brothers and sisters in CERC Kolkata Fellowship who have been affected by the pandemic. Let us pray for our Missionary Pastor as he cares for the saints in Kolkata and that God will uphold the saints in their fervent desire to gather for worship at Rev Singh’s home on the Lord’s Day.
