Serving One Another

The enjoyment of our earthly possessions depends upon keeping our earthly lives. Therefore our lives are more important than these possessions. If a man would give us a million dollars, but could not save us from a fatal disease that takes our life away the day after we received that gift, he has not given us the most precious gift.

Consider then that most wonderful work of Christ in which He gave His life in order that we might receive everlasting life and heavenly blessedness in the coming kingdom of heaven. Paul speaks of this in Philippians 2:8 in these words: "And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."

Now His death was not to keep us alive on this sinful earth and with a sinful nature. It was to blot out our guilt and to make it possible for us to be born again and to have that most blessed life in the kingdom of heaven. To do this, as Paul wrote in verse 7, He took upon Him the form of a servant, thereby serving us in a most blessed way. Get this: He died for our sins that we might live in a richer covenant life with God and in a heavenly bliss far richer than Adam had before he fell, and more wonderful than the holy angels who never sinned are enjoying today.

What an example for us! No wonder Paul told us, in verse 5, to let this mind be in us, which was in Christ. Christ gave us all He had; and we must do all that we can for the well-being of His church. That mind of Christ to serve us must be our mind in the sense that we serve Him by serving all the fellow believers that we can reach. Losing our lives in the way of persecution is not going to bring everlasting spiritual lives to them. But, as Paul wrote, we must look on the things of others in the sense that we are interested in helping them spiritually as much as we can.

Help them by making it possible for them to hear the truth, the gospel of what Christ did for them. Encourage them and comfort them with the truth, to assure them of what Christ did for them, so that He is also their example in a godly walk.
