  • Today Rev. R. Barnhill (Heritage PRC) declined the call to Lynden PRC (WA). 

  • Last Sunday Rev. J. Engelsma (Crete PRC, IL) declined the call to Hope PRC-Redlands.

  • Rev. M. DeBoer (Edgerton PRC-MN) is considering the call to Hope PRC (Walker, MI - received July 7).

  • Loveland PRC's Consistory has formed a new trio from which to call a pastor: Revs. M. De Boer (Edgerton PRC, MN), Rev. J. Smidstra (1st PRC, Holland, MI), and Candidate Arend Haveman. The congregation will call today. UPDATE: Cand. Haveman has received this call.

  • Georgetown PRC's Council has formed a trio of Revs. R. Barnhill (Heritage PRC Sioux Falls, SD), A. Brummel (Calvary PRC, Hull, IA), and D. Noorman (SW PRC). A congregational meeting is planned for Sunday July 28 after the evening service.

  • The Consistory of Hope PRC-Redlands, CA has announced a new trio from which to call a pastor: Revs. G. Eriks (Unity PRC) and A. Brummel (Calvary PRC), and Candidate Arend Haveman. A congregational meeting will be held next Sunday morning, July 28, after the worship service.

  • Hudsonville PRC's Council has chosen a new trio from which to call her next pastor: Revs. A. Brummel, Rev. M. DeBoer, and Rev. D. Lee. The congregation will vote on July 28 after the Sunday evening service.

  • After approving the examination of Arend Haveman, the 2024 PRC Synod has declared the brother a candidate for the ministry of the Word and sacraments in the PRC, eligible for a call on or after July 13. We give thanks to the Lord for providing another laborer in His vineyard.
  • PRC 100th Anniversary Celebration: All the members of the PRCA, our sister churches, and close contacts are encouraged to come together at Calvin University from June 2-6, 2025 (note the new dates) to participate in this commemorative week.   • The PR Theological Seminary has completed its second semester and is enjoying its summer break. Faculty, students, and staff are busy with normal and special duties during these months, all in preparation for a new semester, which will begin, D.V., on August 26.   • With joy the faculty of the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary announces that it has licensed second-student Bruce Feenstra to speak a word of edification in the churches. We are grateful for the brother’s progress to this point in his training.   • The Spring 2024 issue of the PR Theological Journal is currently available. The digital editions (pdf and epub) have been posted on the journal page (visit the link here). This latest issue features three main articles, one dealing with the history of common grace at the 1924 Synod in the Christian Reformed Church (which led to the formation of the Protestant Reformed Churches), one involving another translation of H. Bouwman's work on the Reformed Church Order, and another chapter from Prof. D. Kuiper on the history of Classis West in the PRC. Plus, there is a good number of book reviews again, on a variety of subjects.     • Pastors J. Tan and M. Wee are faithfully serving the CERC. Both pastors preached today. This special note is found in this week's "pastoral note": "In light of last Sunday’s Adult CI class on stewardship by Pastor Tan, we consider yet another principle of giving: that the giving of our offerings is an act of worship. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2: 'Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.” Giving is an important aspect of our worship, as the apostle Paul commands the Corinthian Christians, and the rest of the NT church, to “lay by him in store” on “the first day of the week”; that is, on the Lord’s Day, when the saints gathered together for worship."

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

 JESUS IS THE WORD

John does not start his gospel with the details of Jesus birth. Rather he starts with Jesus’ dwelling with God before time began or the earth was formed. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1).” In the Bible there are several beginnings: the beginning of the world, the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the beginning of sorrows, the beginning of miracles, etc. Here, it is the beginning, before creation, before the beginning of time. We read in Genesis 1, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth.” Jesus was there and he was “with God”. This means that He was in the presence of God. And it means secondly that he has a separate personality. He is the second person of the Trinity. He always existed, not created. “And the Word was God.”

He is called the Word, because he reveals God. He communicates, he speaks, and he spoke and all things were made by him (vs. 3). Some people think that God cannot be known. They are called agnostics, which means ‘not know”. But we can know God, and we can know his Son, Jesus Christ. God reveals and makes himself known: in creation, in Scripture (the written Word), and more importantly, in his Son, Jesus (the incarnate Word).

JESUS IS MADE FLESH

In John 1:14, we read, “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” The plain meaning of those words is, that the second person of the Trinity, who always existed now took on himself our human nature. He who is God now also became a man. A big word for that is incarnation. It means the in-fleshing. He did not stop being God. But now he also was a real, sinless, perfect man. Luke’s Gospel tells us of his miraculous birth from a virgin. He had no earthly father because God was his Father. We have this great mystery that we celebrate every Christmas. We read in I Tim. 3:16, “Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh.”

Why would God want to do this? Why would he want to become a human being? Why would he leave the glory and beauty of heaven to come down into our world which is filled with sickness, pain, suffering, and death? God’s Word states: “and he dwelt among us.” The word ‘dwelt’ can be translated ‘tabernacle’. In the Old Testament, as the people of Israel travelled through the wilderness, they lived in tents. And in the center of their tents was the Tabernacle of God. It was God’s dwelling place. It was temporary, merely a tent, something suited to be moved about during the travels to Canaan. It was the place where God met with his people and spoke to them. And it was the place of worship and where the sacrifices were made. So, in “the Word made flesh”, God comes down to visit us in Jesus. God comes to dwell with us and live in closest fellowship with us.

Are you lonely? Do you have times when you wish there was someone you could unburden to? Jesus, God’s Son, dwells with us. For 33 years he dwelt with us in his flesh. But now that Jesus is risen from the dead, he is physically in heaven, but still with us by his Spirit and his Word. You can talk to him in prayer. He is God with us. The name Immanuel or Emmanuel means “God with us.” The ‘el’ at the end of the name Emmanuel is the word for God. The rest of that name means ‘with us’. God would be with his people and never forsake them. Jesus cares. He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities so that he can be our sympathetic high priest in heaven. The name Immanuel refers to the fact that Jesus is God and man in one person. In him, God is with us in the closest possible way.

Jesus was born into this world. He lived and died here. He is one with us. He came down from heaven to dwell with us in our sinful condition. He came down from heaven to stand in our place and take our sins upon himself. He came to suffer and die, so that we might live and have fellowship with God. He arose from the dead and ascended into heaven so that he gives us his eternal life.

Nehemiah’s Night Ride

The Bible records several instances of people riding on animals, such as Abraham’s old servant bringing Rebekah on a camel as a bride for Isaac (Gen. 24), Solomon mounted on David’s mule on his way out of Jerusalem to his coronation by the Gihon spring (I Kings 1) and Christ’s triumphal entry into the holy city upon a colt, the foal of an ass, on Palm Sunday (Zech. 9:9; John 12:12-16).

However, only Nehemiah’s famous journey on a “beast” (Neh. 2:12, 14) around Jerusalem’s decaying walls took place at “night” (12, 13, 15). In order for the governor and his mount to see sufficiently, it must have been a relatively clear night and it may well have been nearer to a full moon than to a new moon.

Nehemiah’s journey started at the valley gate (13) on the west side of fifth-century BC Jerusalem and so slightly nearer the city’s southern end than its northern end. Since he “went out” by that gate (13), the governor rode around the outside of the perimeter walls, not the inside, before reentering by the valley gate (15).

What direction did he take? Nehemiah 2 mentions specifically three different gates or ports in this order: the valley gate (13), the dung gate (13) and the fountain gate (14). With the help of any decent Bible atlas, one can easily see that Nehemiah journeyed anticlockwise or counterclockwise.

But what was the purpose of his night ride? To answer this, we need only recall that Nehemiah’s central calling at this time was to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Thus he was checking out their condition to see what needed to be done. Back in the citadel of Susa far to the east, Nehemiah had heard of their disrepair from his brother, Hanani, and some men of Judah (1:2-3). Especially now that he is in Jerusalem, the governor could have commissioned others to examine the perimeter wall and its gates, but he did not. Nehemiah needed to see it for himself so that he would possess first-hand knowledge.

How far did Nehemiah ride? Did he partially circumnavigate Jerusalem’s walls or did he make a full circuit? Given the governor’s purpose, the answer is the latter.

What were the results of his viewing or inspection (2:13, 15)? Nehemiah saw personally that Jerusalem’s defensive wall was mostly rubble. Charred wood was found where once sturdy gates had hung. The governor tells us that it was especially bad near the southern end of the western wall, for fallen masonry meant that “there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass” (14).

Not only did Nehemiah need personal knowledge of the condition of Jerusalem’s walls but he also needed to keep others from knowing what he was doing (both the Jews and their enemies), at least, for a time. Nehemiah 2 lays great emphasis on Nehemiah’s secrecy. The governor’s riding at “night” (12, 13, 15)—at a time when people were sleeping: “I arose in the night” (12)—was so that people would not see what he was doing and that it was he. A special retirement dinner is being held at Southwest PRC on July 8. May the Lord continue to use him for good in the churches in the years to come.

Both pastors preached today. This special note is found in this week's "pastoral note": "This morning we have our ordination and installation of office-bearers. We thank God for providing us with qualified men to serve in the office of elder and deacon, and pray that God will equip them mightily by His Holy Spirit to serve in their respective offices. Let us heed the admonition of Scripture in receiving these office-bearers rightly. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13: 'And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; [13] And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.' This Week's Thought for Contemplation

 "The wrath of God against sin as revealed in this world becomes evident in different ways. There is the present death of all men that culminates in the corruption of the body and all the suffering of this present time connected with it. All men lie in the midst of death, also in the midst of physical death. Death reigns over all men (Rom. 5:12–14). Death encompasses us on all sides. It is the grim specter that always stands waiting at the end of our earthly way, no matter in which direction we turn. It is the enemy that relentlessly pursues us, frequently reminding us by sickness and pain, sorrow and grief, and physical and mental agony, of the certainty of its final victory and dooming all our efforts to ultimate failure. All is vanity. Death is no accident. It is not the natural end of all existence. It is the hand of God that is heavy upon us. Death is the expression of the wrath of God against sin. The wrath of God abides on us and never gives us a moment’s respite. Looking at man’s present existence apart from Christ, it is nothing but testimony to the truth of what the Catechism declares: God is ‘terribly displeased with our original as well as actual sins; and will punish them in his just judgment temporally and eternally.’… The only way out of the present wrath of God is the cross of Christ, and the sole ray of light that pierces the darkness of our present death is his resurrection.” (Herman Hoeksema)

  • Q. 9. Doth not God then do injustice to man, by requiring from him in His law that which he cannot perform?

  • This morning Rev. J. Mahtani was installed as the second pastor in Pittsburgh PRC's history. Rev. C. Haak, his father-in-law, led the service and is also leading the evening service. We pray the Lord gives pastor Mahtani a faithful and fruitful ministry in his new congregation.

  • Rev. J. Engelsma (Crete PRC, IL) is considering the call to Hope PRC-Redlands. He plans to answer next week.

  • Rev. R. Barnhill (Heritage PRC) is considering the call to Lynden (WA). He plans to answer by July 21.

  • The Council of Hope PRC (Walker, MI) has formed a trio of Revs. M. DeBoer, N. Decker, and J. Maatman. The congregation will vote this evening after her service. UPDATE: Rev. DeBoer has received this call.

  • The Council of Zion PRC (Jenison, MI) has announced a new trio of Revs. N. Decker, J. Smidstra, and C. Spronk. The congregational meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, July 9. UPDATE: Rev. Decker has received this call.

  • Loveland PRC's Consistory has formed a new trio from which to call a pastor: Revs. M. De Boer (Edgerton PRC, MN), Rev. J. Smidstra (1st PRC, Holland, MI), and Candidate Arend Haveman. The congregation will call on July 21.

Classical appointments and pulpit supply for today in the vacant PRCs:  Prof. C. Griess and Prof. B. Huizinga in Georgetown PRC;  Prof. R. Cammenga and Rev. W. Langerak in Hope PRC-Walker; Rev. J.   • After approving the examination of Arend Haveman, the 2024 PRC Synod has declared the brother a candidate for the ministry of the Word and sacraments in the PRC, eligible for a call on or after July 13. We give thanks to the Lord for providing another laborer in His vineyard.
  • PRC 100th Anniversary Celebration: All the members of the PRCA, our sister churches, and close contacts are encouraged to come together at Calvin University from June 2-6, 2025 (note the new dates) to participate in this commemorative week. PRC Seminary Notices:

  • The PR Theological Seminary has now completed its second semester and entered its summer break. Faculty, students, and staff will be busy with normal and special duties during these months, all in preparation for a new semester, which will begin, D.V., on August 26. Continue to pray for faculty, students, and staff as we labor during these next months.
  • As of last month, Prof. R. Cammenga is officially retired as professor of Dogmatics and Old Testament, though he will be assisting with a class yet in the next school year. He has served the PRTS for nearly twenty years (2005-2024), and we thank the Lord for his faithful and diligent labors on behalf of the churches. A special retirement dinner is being held at Southwest PRC on July 8. May the Lord continue to use him for good in the churches in the years to come.
  • With joy the faculty of the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary announces that it has licensed second-student Bruce Feenstra to speak a word of edification in the churches. We are grateful for the brother’s progress to this point in his training. This Week's Thought for Contemplation

 "We believe that there is a legitimate place for entertainment in the life of the child of God. The Christian may relax, go on a vacation from time to time, have some fun, and enjoy the good gifts that God has bestowed upon him and his family. Paul writes to Timothy, 'Every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer' (I Tim. 4:4-5). That passage is important for the understanding of our subject, for it warns against legalism and a too strict view of the Christian life, and it tells us that we can use all things that God has made, keeping two things in mind: first, the Word of God instructs us how to use God's creatures and gifts, and secondly, by prayer in respect to this use, His gifts are sanctified unto us. Then we use this world, and not abuse it.

"Another passage that comes to mind in respect to our use of God's gifts is I Corinthians 10:31: 'Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.' This means, of course, that entertainment is not an end in itself. Entertainment may not be divorced from our calling as Christians to serve and glorify God at all times. Entertainment may not, and cannot, stand on its own feet as something good in itself. It is only a means, a means to a higher end and purpose. Recreation and exercise as a means unto better health? Fine. Vacations and sports as a means of relaxation in order to serve God the better? Fine. But as soon as entertainment goes beyond that, as soon as it becomes an end in itself, as soon as our sports and our hobbies consume us, then we abuse God's good gifts and our lives are not lives of balance and moderation but rather of excess and imbalance."

CONGREGATIONAL NEWS 

  • This evening Rev. J. Mahtani preached his farewell sermon in Hope PRC (Walker, MI). A farewell program is planned at the church and then fellowship at Hope PRCS afterward. He and his family move to Pittsburgh this week, where he plans to be installed as pastor of Pittsburgh PRC next Sunday, July 7. 

  • Last week Hope PRC-Redlands extended a call to Rev. J. Engelsma (Crete PRC).

  • Last Sunday Lynden (WA) PRC voted to call Rev. R. Barnhill (Heritage PRC).

  • The PR Theological Seminary has now completed its second semester and entered its summer break. Faculty, students, and staff will be busy with normal and special duties during these months, all in preparation for a new semester, which will begin, D.V., on August 26.   • Senior seminarian Arend Havemen successfully sustained his examination before the PRC Synod earlier this month and is now a candidate for the ministry of the Word and sacraments in the PRC and her sister churches. His graduation took place on June 13 in Trinity PRC. We congratulate the brother and thank the Lord for his gifts and this gift to the churches of a new candidate.
  • With joy the faculty of the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary announces that it has licensed second-student Bruce Feenstra to speak a word of edification in the churches. We are grateful for the brother’s progress to this point in his training. This Week's Thought for Contemplation

 "As Reformed believers, we confess that civil government has been ordained by God. Whatever particular government exists in a country has been ordained by God, whether that government be a democracy, whether it be communism, or whether it be a dictatorship or a monarchy. We who live in the United States have heard too long that government is “of the people.” We must not fall for this idea. Government is not “of the people.” Government is of God! We read in Romans 13:1: “There is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained of God.” Government is ordained of God. This truth is very important for our view of our government and our country.


"A second element in the Reformed view is that the state, with all of its officers, is the servant of God. Three times Romans 13 says of those in government that they are ministers or servants of God. What an honorable title! Those who are cynics with regard to leaders in government must listen to what God calls government officials: “My servants (ministers).” If only our officials saw themselves as God’s servants! Whether they are politicians or judges, or whether they sit on juries, they ought not to be swayed by public opinion, but search the will of God, as His ministers.


"The state serves God. Calvin writes in his Institutes: 'God has two great servants in the world: the church who serves Him freely by His grace, and the state which serves God in His providence. The one is spiritual whereby the conscience is instructed in piety and in reverencing God; the other is political whereby man is educated for the duties of humanity and civil life that must be maintained among men.' God’s government is twofold — the one ruling the inner man, the other ruling the outward behavior of man. The principle here is that Christ rules; He is Lord over all of life. He exercises both a spiritual and temporal jurisdiction, a twofold government: the church and civil authorities. Both of them are the arms of Christ Jesus. The truth of God and of Christ will be upheld and regulated by these two kinds of governments. They are two servants that print the Lordship of Jesus Christ over a person’s life. They are not incompatible, not at variance, and not antithetical. They complement each other."

  • Special note: Rev. H. Bleyenberg and Deb are in Singapore yet today. He participated in CERC's annual church camp this week and is preaching both services today. The Bleyenbergs plan to return home, the Lord willing, on June 25.

  • Wingham PRC bulletin today concerning the arrival of Sem. A. Van Dyke, Sarah, and their two children for his internship this week: "PLAN ON COMING OUT for a special evening to welcome the Van Dykes to our congregation! The Van Dykes will be moving to Canada this week, the Lord willing. We will be having a singspiration on Sunday, June 30, at 7p.m. Refreshments and fellowship will follow afterwards."

  • UPDATE: Zion PRC (Jenison, MI): "The Council has scheduled a congregational meeting for Tuesday, July 9th at 7:00 p.m. to vote to call a minister from a trio of Reverends N. Decker, J. Smidstra, and C. Spronk."

  • Rev. J. Mahtani's installation in Pittsburgh PRC is scheduled for July 7. He and his family plan to move the end of this month after his farewell at Hope PRC on June 30.

PRC Synod 2024 - Day 7, Thursday - June 20, 2024

The 2024 PRC Synod will return to its work this morning at 8 a.m. in the fellowship area of Trinity PRC after its recess yesterday. It will begin deliberating on the advice of Committee IV, dealing with the third-party investigation into sexual abuse in the PRC and various protests. Synod also has some financial matters from Committee V to treat.

May the Lord again guide the delegates and advisors by His Spirit and grace. Be in prayer for the body today.

Final Report of the 2024 Synod of the PRCA 

 
Today synod treated a majority report and a minority report on six protests against a decision of Synod 2023 to hire Guidepost Solutions to investigate sexual abuse in the Protestant Reformed Churches of America. Both reports were read. After deliberation on the majority report, Synod decided to approve its recommendation to “sustain the protests and declare that Synod 2023 erred by authorizing a secular organization to assist Christ’s church in an ecclesiastical work (investigating sin) that belongs exclusively to the church” on three grounds: 
 
1. Synod 2023’s grounds for hiring a secular organization were flawed in two respects.
a. First, no ground used scriptural principles to demonstrate that consistories are permitted to use a secular organization to help them investigate cases of sin (Agenda pp. 488, 495, 504, 507). Such clear demonstration is necessary when taking action that is weighty, controversial, and unprecedented.
b. Second, no ground used church-political principles to demonstrate that consistories are permitted to use a secular organization to help them investigate cases of sin (Agenda pp. 487, 504). Particularly this is true of synod’s third ground. Such clear demonstration is necessary when taking action that is weighty, controversial, and unprecedented.
 
2. Synod’s decision to authorize a secular organization to assist Christ’s church in an ecclesiastical work conflicts with Reformed ecclesiology.
 
3. Synod 2023’s decision conflicts with the Bible’s teaching that the church, in carrying out her calling, must consciously depend on God for His help, may turn to others within the church for their help, but may not turn to a secular organization for help in investigating cases of sin. As was pointed out in the protests, “the church of Jesus Christ is spiritually distinct in character from that of a secular organization.”
 
Synod’s decision did NOT declare the decision of 2023 erred in seeking to combat the sin of the sexual abuse of minors by using a third party to assist the PRCA in discovering the extent of the sin within the PRCA. The decision also did NOT declare the decision of 2023 erred in judging that the PRCA needed assistance from an independent third-party to help PRCA examine itself for the purpose of identifying and seeking to overcome woeful weaknesses and failures in addressing the sin of abuse. While synod declared it erred in hiring a secular organization to do church work, the proper perspective is that the focus must be on the much more serious matters of combatting the heinous sin and crime of child sexual abuse and of acknowledging and seeking to overcome the devastating sin of the improper response to child sexual abuse by consistories. 
 
Synod also treated recommendations regarding the work of the Ad Hoc committee that Synod 2023 appointed to work with Guidepost. Synod thanked the committee for its labors and disbanded the committee. Synod appointed a new special committee to “To review the minutes and supplements of the Ad Hoc Committee; to evaluate Guidepost’s final assessment report as well as its methodology; to report to synod 2025.” Synod also mandated that the committee work with Guidepost to publish their assessment report as soon as possible (the report belongs to Guidepost and cannot be published without prior written permission). 
Perhaps the newly appointed committee or others in the denomination will draw up proposals for using an appropriate organization that belongs to the church organic to investigate the sin of sexual abuse in the PRCA, even though this was not mandated by synod.  
 
Synod adopted a recommendation of the Ad Hoc Committee to “remind consistories that they represent Christ and answer to Him, for which reason they must continue in the work of rooting out the evil of sexual abuse from our churches by doing due diligence in the thorough investigation of each abuse case reported to them, by decisive implementation of church discipline for the genuine repentance of the perpetrator, by compassionate care for each victim, and by diligent protection of the members of the congregations.” 
 
Synod approved expenses for the meeting totaling $13,727.93. 
 
After synod adjourned, Rev. Bill Langerak, chairman of this year’s meeting, closed with prayer.

Synod Day Six Report

Today Committee 3 presented its advice for treating several appeals to Synod having to do with doctrinal issues.

The first recommendation of the committee advised synod not to sustain three appellants. Classis East ruled in February of 2024 that the Consistory of Grandville PRC “erred when they made a judgment that Rev. Ken Koole was guilty of the public sin of teaching false doctrine without proving this from Scripture or the Confessions.” The three appellants asked synod to overturn this decision of Classis East. On the basis of two grounds synod approved the advice of Committee 3 not to sustain the appellants and to uphold the decision of Classis East. Ground 2 succinctly states, “None of the appellants have proved that Grandville’s original decision of April 22, 2021 was carefully grounded in Scripture and the confessions.”

The second recommendation of Committee 3 advised synod to sustain an appeal of Grandville PRC’s Consistory against a decision of Classis East. Grandville contended that Classis East did not give a proper ruling on a statement quoted and explained by Rev. Koole, namely,“Scripture teaches that something must be done that we may be saved.” Synod decided to adopt the advice the committee and made the judgment that the statement “a)…is erroneouswhen referring to our good works, and b) Rev. Koole’s explanation and use of [the statement] was erroneous” on two grounds.

The third recommendation of Committee 3 advised synod to sustain an appeal of Grandville’s Consistory against a decision of Classis East regarding a second statement quoted and explained by Rev. Koole, namely, “We must accurately distinguish between a right to life and the possession of life. The former must be assigned to the obedience of Christ, that all the values of our holiness may be entirely excluded. But certainly, our works, or rather these, which the Spirit of Christ worketh in us, and by us, contribute something to the latter.” Synod also approved this recommendation making the judgment that “a) Statement #2 is erroneous, and b) Rev. Koole’s promotion of the statement was erroneous” on two grounds.

The fourth recommendation of Committee 3 advised synod not to sustain an appeal of Grandville’s consistory against the decision of Classis East regarding a third statement quoted and explained by Rev. Koole, namely, “Hence, I conclude, that sanctification and its effects, are by no means to be slighted, when we treat of assuring the soul as to its justification.” Synod approved the recommendation and made the judgment that “a) this statement, although not a clear statement of orthodoxy, is not erroneous, and b) Rev. Koole’s explanation and use of the statement were not in conflict with Scripture, the confessions, and Synod 2018” on the basis of two grounds.

The fifth and final recommendation of Committee 3 advised synod to sustain Grandville Consistory’s appeal against a decision of Classis East advising the consistory “to publicly retract its decision to charge Rev. Koole with the public sin of teaching false doctrine.” Synod adopted the recommendation to sustain Grandville Consistory, which means that the consistory does not have to retract publicly its decision. The two grounds were adopted by synod with a lengthy section of explanation that is not copied here for the sake of space but should be carefully read when the Acts of Synod 2024 are published. The important points to be noted include 1) it was proper for the consistory to require of Rev. Koole a public apology for publicly teacher error, 2) there is no evidence that Rev. Koole deliberately or purposely was seeking to teach contrary to the Scriptures and the Reformed Confessions, and 3) Grandville’s Consistory never sought to use Articles 79 and 80 of the Church order to charge Rev. Koole with deliberately and persistently teaching contrary to Scripture and the Reformed confessions.

After concluding the advice of Committee 3 synod treated advice from Committee 2 that had been recommitted for reformulation. Synod adopted the recommendation of the committee to provide financial assistance to the Berean PRCP for a downpayment for a parsonage for the congregation.

Synod also adopted a recommendation from Committee 2 to provide each family in the PRCA with a total of three copies of the revised Psalter (earlier synod decided to provide each family with 1 copy and decided on 2 more copies today).

Professor Doug Kuiper read to synod a letter accepting its appointment for permanent tenure as Professor of Church History and New Testament in our seminary.

Synod ended the day by treating a number of recommendations from Committee 5. Some highlights:

1. Approved emeritation requests for retired ministers and their wives.
2. Approved of subsidy for 6 needy churches for 2025.
3. Adopted a budget for 2025. The total of budgeted expenses is $2,911,326. The synodical assessment per family in 2025 was set for $600, the same as in 2024. Note: the estimated number of families used for these assessments in 2025 was 2,100.
4. Appointed Faith PRC as the host of Synod 2025 to convene on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at 8:00am. Faith looks forward to hosting synod for the examination of Seminarian Aaron VanDyke, a member of Faith!

Synod is in recess until 8:00 am on Thursday. Committee 4 will be working until then to prepare advice on the six protests of the decision of Synod 2023 to approve the hiring of a third-party organization to investigate sexual abuse within the PRCA.

I should have mentioned this earlier, but it must be said that Trinity PRC, the custodians and kitchen committee especially, has done an amazing job hosting the sessions of synod.

PRC Synod 2024 - Day 5, Monday - June 17, 2024

On Monday, June 17, 2024, the PRC Synod returned for another session beginning at 8 a.m. They met for the morning, covering material from Committee II on the Foreign Mission Committee before turning to the material from Committee IV on the third-party investigation and the protests related to it. Some of the advice was recommitted to that committee, and at that point synod decided to recess until Tueasday morning to allow Committees III and IV time to bring advice.

Synod plans to resume work at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Synod Day Five Report

Synod began its day by adopting various guidelines for giving financial assistance in foreign lands.

Synod took a noteworthy decision to declare Prof. Ronald Cammenga emeritus (retired) and expressed appreciation to Prof. Cammenga for his 45 years of faithful service as a minister of the Word and sacraments in our churches, 20 of these years as a professor in our seminary. We pray that God bless Prof. and Rhonda Cammenga as they continue in a different station to serve the kingdom of God.

Synod approved significant revisions to the catechism material for the Juniors (4th and 5th graders) curriculum.

Synod sent the material of the six protests regarding the hiring of third-party to investigate sexual abuse in the PRCA back to the committee of pre-advice to provide reformulated advice.

Synod approved of the work of a special committee that is working on an abuse manual that is intended to provide guidelines for the churches and encouraged the committee to continue its work.

Synod recessed in order to give committee III (appeals regarding doctrine) and Committee IV (protests regarding the third-party investigation) time to work.

Synod will begin its work on Tuesday, June 18, at 8:00am by treating the material of Committee III
