PRC and Sister-Church News Highlights for September 29, 2024

Today, September 29, is the thirty-ninth Lord's Day of this year of our Lord 2024, and another rest stop on our pilgrim journey through this world. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

Below you will find special highlights of PRC and sister-church news. It is our hope that these reports not only inform you but also give you opportunity to pray for the needs of these churches and mission fields throughout the world.

For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory. CONGREGATIONAL NEWS 

• Last Sunday (Sept.22) Lynden PRC (WA) voted to call Rev. A. Brummel (Calvary PRC-Hull, IA).
  
  
• Last Sunday (Sept.22) Southwest PRC (Wyoming, MI) voted to call Rev. N. Decker (Grandville PRC). He plans to answer by Oct.13.
  
  
• This past Monday (Sept.23) Hope PRC-Redlands, CA voted to call Rev. A. Brummel.
  
  
• This past Wednesday (Sept.25) at the meeting of Classis West in Hull PRC (IA) pastor-elect A. Haveman (Loveland PRC-CO) was examined and approved for ordination. That will take place on Oct.13, with Rev. G. Eriks leading the service. Loveland PRC's bulletin today includes the good news: "Pastor-elect Arend Haveman gave his specimen sermon before the delegates of Classis West and Hull PRC in a worship service this past Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, Classis approved the sermon and proceeded to Arend's examination in theology, Bible knowledge, confessions, and practica. Classis West approved Pastor-elect Haveman's examination and advised us to proceed with his ordination. We can rejoice in God's graciousness and goodness in providing a pastor for our congregation and the denomination. 'And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.'" Jeremiah 3:15
   
• Rev. N. Decker (Grandville PRC) is considering the call to Hope PRC (Walker, MI). He plans to answer by October 13.
  
  
• Rev. C. Spronk (Faith PRC) is considering the call to Zion PRC (Jenison, MI). He plans to answer by October 13 (an extension was granted).

• Trinity PRC-Hudsonville, MI: "Did you know you have dual citizenship? The Trinity PRC Evangelism Committee invites you to a timely speech by Prof. D. Kuiper on October 10 at 7:00 PM at Trinity PRC. We encourage you to bring a friend or a neighbor along to hear how we should be living as christians in a worldly country. This speech will be livestreamed for those not able to make it in person."

PRC DENOMINATIONAL NEWS

• Classis East met September 18-19, at Georgetown PRC. The body plans to reconvene this Wednesday, Oct.1, to finish its work. For a report on the meetings and decisions made last week, visit this page. May the Lord bless the decisions reached to this point and guide the delegates once more as they return to their work.
  
  
• Classis West: Classis West met this past Wednesday, Sept.25, in Hull, Iowa. For a report on this meeting visit this page on the PRC website.
  
  
• Note the addition of a part-time option! The Domestic Mission Committee plans to hire a full-time or part-time website manager for the new PRCA website. The new website is being designed to improve our worldwide evangelism and to improve usability for all PRCA members and churches. Initially the work will be to maintain the current site and assist with the development of the new website. Besides day-to-day maintenance, the web manager’s future role will be to promote and feature a wide range of PRCA materials. • PRC 100th Anniversary Celebration: All the members of the PRCA, our sister churches, and close contacts are encouraged to come together at Calvin University from June 2-6, 2025 (note the new dates) to participate in this commemorative week. PRC Seminary Notices:

• The PR Theological Seminary has now completed five weeks of this first semester of its 2024-25 school year. Things go well under the Lord's blessing, for which we give thanks. Remember to pray for faculty, students, and staff as they continue in the normal semester labors and activities. The first semester's schedule and calendar (2024-25) have been posted on this webpage.
• This week Isaac Van Baren will lead the daily devotions. He and his wife Liz also celebrated the gift of their third son, Caleb Herman, last week. Chapel on Wednesday will be led by Rev. D. Lee, pastor of Kalamazoo PRC.
• The first round of practice preaching will be held next Monday, Oct.7, at Southwest PRC. Bruce Feenstra and Isaac Van Baren are due to deliver sermons.
• The annual Seminary Convocation was held in Byron Center PRC on September 4. A full church of attenders sang and prayed together and also heard Prof. C. Griess speak on Colossians 2:8-10, "The Spoiled Pastor." Look for the video of the evening on the Seminary's YouTube channel soon. The audio of the speech may be heard here.
• Sem. Bruce Feenstra has been licensed to to speak a word of edification in the churches. All scheduling of Mr. Feenstra must be done through the seminary, either by sending a request to the seminary secretary (This email address is being protected from spambots. • Sem. Aaron Van Dyke is interning this summer and fall in our Wingham, Ontario congregation, under the supervision of Wingham’s Consistory and the mentoring of Rev. Daniel Holstege. The internship runs from July 1 through December 31. Continue to pray for Mr. Van Dyke and his family during his internship. Today he is leading both services while Rev. Holstege is in Michigan yet.
• 100th Anniversary Seminary Conference: Did you know that ministers in our mother 100th Anniversary Seminary Conference: Did you know that ministers in our mother church in 1924 viewed common grace as the middle way between being liberal and fleeing the world? And that our denomination’s fathers rejected common grace as compromising the antithesis? Come to the next seminary conference to hear a fresh perspective on the doctrine that gave rise to our denomination. The theme is “By Grace I Am What I Am”: The PRCA’s Rejection of Common Grace. Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 31, through Saturday, November 2, at Grace PRC in Standale, MI. Help us praise God for His grace on the occasion of our centennial!
• The Spring 2024 issue of the PR Theological Journal is currently available. The digital editions (pdf and epub) are posted on the journal page (visit the link here). This latest issue features three main articles, one dealing with the history of common grace at the 1924 Synod in the Christian Reformed Church (which led to the formation of the Protestant Reformed Churches), one involving another translation of H. Bouwman's work on the Reformed Church Order, and another chapter from Prof. D. Kuiper on the history of Classis West in the PRC. Plus, there is a good number of book reviews again, on a variety of subjects. The Fall 2024 issue is currently being worked on. • Covenant ERC, Singapore and her Kolkata, India mission work:
  • Pastors J. Tan and M. Wee are faithfully serving the CERC. Both pastors led services today, and pastor Tan wrote about the major events in king Hezekiah's life in this week's pastoral voice in the bulletin. "Now what would you answer and how would you answer when someone asked you, What have you accomplished in your life? Let that be our reflection this day especially in light 2 Chro 32:25."
    
  • A new issue of Salt Shakers is available - August2024, #73, the third of this year!  Once again you will find a variety of articles on timely subjects in this issue! Written especially for young people and young adults, SS is edifying for all adults!

• Covenant PRC, N. Ireland:
  • Rev. A. Stewart continues to minister the gospel of sovereign grace faithfully in the CPRC, Ballymena, N. Ireland - and beyond!
  • The August 2024 issue of "Covenant Reformed News" is the latest available. Read the articles by Rev. A. Stewart on the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls (Nehemiah) and part two of Rev. R. Hanko's response to a question about "The Civil and Ceremonial Laws" of the Old Testament.

We pray for God’s continued care and blessings upon them as they hear the Word of God."

• This month - September2024 - the RWH continues broadcasting five gospel messages by Rev. W. Bruinsma on the subject of Christ's return and its signs. Today's message is titled "Peace Shall Destroy Many" based on Daniel 8:23-25.
  
  
• The Reformed Witness Hour publishes each month's messages in an attractive booklet. It seems that everywhere we look today, we see conflict: in the world, which, because of its rebellion against God, is doomed never to enjoy peace; in marriages, even Christian marriages; in homes, even in Christian homes; and in churches. The little letter to Philemon contains principles of peace which we would be wise to follow—especially since, as the children of God, we are called to be peacemakers. • The Reformed Book Outlet (downtown Hudsonville, MI) is now operating out of its new store in downtown Hudsonville (3472 Harvey St.). Visit the store and browse the variety of resources for your Reformed-Christian faith and walk, including many children's titles. They are open Tuesday-Friday, 10-5, and Saturday 10-1.

This Week's Thought for Contemplation

From the article "Honor" by Rev. Joe Holstege (one of this month's newly added items)

"God’s idea of honor is exactly the opposite. Where foolish men seek honor through strife, clawing and pry­ing their way to the top, God says “it is an honor for a man to cease from strife” (Prov. 20:3). Where foolish men say honor comes to those who seize it for them­selves, God says “riches, and honor, and life” come “by humility and the fear of the Lord” (Prov. 22:4). Where foolish women aim to be honorable by sitting in the gates with the men, God says “strength and honor” are the clothing of the woman who fears him by serving her household (Prov. 31:25). Where foolish husbands despise the delicate nature of their wives, God says she ought to be given “honor…as unto the weaker vessel” (I Pet. 3:7). Where we think some members of the body of Christ are “less honorable” because they “seem to be more feeble,” God says these members not only are “necessary,” but on them we ought to “bestow more abundant honor” (I Cor. 12:23) as we walk in the more excellent way of love.

"Honor is really an attitude of the heart. The Old Testament word often rendered into English as “hon­or” means, at its root, “heavy or weighty.” If you com­pare the heart to an old-fashioned scale, how heavily certain persons and objects weigh on that scale reveals what the person finds valuable and important. And this “heaviness” will be evident in the way the honorable person or place or thing is treated. To use a familiar example, to blaspheme the name of God is to treat His name lightly, that is, to take His name “in vain” (Ex. 20:7; Deut. 5:11). To honor the name of God is to let it weigh heavily on your mind and tongue so that you treat it with the utmost gravity and respect."
